Garter Stitch Mittens!

Garter stitch mittens

Size: S, M, L

The sizes run big and because they are knit in garter stitch they stretch easily. . .my large hands are warmest in a medium size mitt.

Yarn: Plymouth Galway on size 7 needles. Pattern requires about 400 yards, 200 of each color. I recommend a heavy worsted weight and a needles one to two sizes smaller than suggested on the yarn label.

Gauge: 16 stitches and 32 rows = 4 inches in Garter stitch

Tools: US size 6, 7, or 8 needles. Use a needle that will give you a nice firm, tight garter stitch fabric. Big eyed needle for seaming, at least two place markers.

Techniques: Garter stitch, short rows, picking up stitches, k2tog, ssk, sewing seams.

Construction: Mittens are knit back and forth and then seamed along the outside of the hand (opposite the thumb) and across the finger tips. The shaping for the top of the fingers and thumb is done using the short row method, which is explained in the pattern.

Pattern notes: Pattern is 8 pages.

Includes photos of each step as it is finished.

Each row for each of three sizes is completely written out.

Pattern Cover

The mittens shown on pattern cover are knit in Worsted weight wool from Gale Woods Farm, on size 8 needles.

Imagine how great these would look in a variegated yarn!
